ECP to hear Imran Khan’s disqualification reference on November 2

ISLAMABAD: As the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) gears up to hold a mass protest in the capital on November 2, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said it would hear a reference against Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, seeking his disqualification on the same date.

The reference filed by Talal Chaudhry of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and six other members of the National Assembly sought disqualification of Imran Khan as MNA under clause (2) of article-63 of the 1973 constitution of Pakistan.

The ECP had already served a notice to Khan for appearing before the commission in person or through his counsel on November 2 at 10 am at its secretariat in Islamabad in connection with the references.

Chairman PTI is also due to lead a mass protest and sit-in in Islamabad on November 2 over the infamous Panamagate Scandal.

Names of several Pakistanis including Nawaz Sharif’s children Maryam, Hussain, and Hasan surfaced in one of the world’s biggest ever data leaks through an online searchable database made public by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in April 2016, following which the prime minister had formed an inquiry commission to probe his family’s alleged links to offshore accounts.

Unfortunately, the federal government and the opposition could not agree on drafting joint terms of reference (ToR) for the, which would probe Panama Papers Leaks.

Later, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) failed to conduct investigations into the case.

Khan has announced to go for a street agitation next month, demanding Nawaz Sharif to step down as premier.
