‘Rawalpindi attack suspect’ killed in Waziristan raid

PESHAWAR: Security forces in a secret operation raided a home situated in Gomal area of South Waziristan and killed a notorious terrorist Iqbal allegedly involved in General Headquarter Rawalpindi attack in 2009.

Source informed that intelligence agencies were informed about the presence of the alleged terrorist in a home situated at Gomal South Waziristan, after which a secret operation with other security forces has been launched.

The forces raided the area and tried to capture the accused but he opened fire. The firing continued for some time as a result Iqbal was shot dead.

The attack took place between 10-11th October, 2009 when according to the investigation of the incident ten militants wearing army uniforms attacked the GHQ in Rawalpindi.

The attack left dead four terrorists, two soldiers and three hostages, while three commando soldiers died succumbed to their injuries.

One of the captured named Muhammad Aqeel alias Dr. Usman who was later said to be the leader of the group and also the alleged mastermind of the 3rd March 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.

Aqeel was hanged to death on 19th December 2014 after moratorium on executions was lifted after the attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar.
